The DuPage County Metra Homebuyer's Guide: UP-West vs. BNSF
A home described as “near Metra” may be a five-minute walk, a fifteen-minute drive or a location that requires scarce parking. For commuters, the correct comparison is door to platform to destination, not town to downtown Chicago.
The five communities in this guide use two different Metra lines. Metra's UP-West page lists Elmhurst, Lombard, Glen Ellyn, College Avenue and Wheaton. Naperville and Route 59 are on the BNSF Line.
Schedules and service can change. Verify the trip for the days and times you actually expect to travel.
Elmhurst
Elmhurst is the easternmost of the five core communities, which can reduce rail distance to Chicago. The station is downtown, but parking method, availability and the walk from a particular property still matter. Review the city's daily parking information.
Home-search tradeoff: properties close to the station and downtown may offer convenience but vary in lot size, traffic exposure and proximity to the tracks.
Lombard
Lombard is also on UP-West. The village operates seven commuter parking lots near the downtown station. Check which spaces are permit-based or daily-use and how the walking route feels at commute time.

Glen Ellyn
Glen Ellyn has a downtown UP-West station. The village's station project and transportation materials provide current local information.
Home-search tradeoff: walkability can change sharply by address because of distance, topography, major roads and the rail corridor. Map the actual route rather than relying on a radius.
Wheaton and College Avenue
Wheaton offers two UP-West stations. The city lists Downtown Wheaton at 402 W. Front Street and College Avenue at 303 N. President Street on its transportation page.
Home-search tradeoff: two stations expand the choices, but the best station depends on parking, drop-off, walking route and schedule. A home may be marketed as Wheaton without being equally convenient to both.
Naperville and Route 59
Naperville is served by the BNSF Line through the Naperville station near downtown and Route 59 station. The city's train-station access guide explains both locations and notes that Route 59 parking is divided between Naperville and Aurora facilities.
Home-search tradeoff: Naperville's size makes station selection especially important. A home can have a Naperville address yet produce a very different commute depending on whether downtown Naperville, Route 59 or another station is practical.

Is the station reached by walking, cycling, drop-off or parking?
What does parking require today?
How long is the trip from the platform to the final destination?
How does the plan work during bad weather, late evenings or schedule disruptions?
Does proximity to Metra guarantee better resale?
No. Transit access can expand the buyer pool, but value also depends on noise, traffic, property condition, taxes, school boundaries and the competing supply when the home is sold. “Walk to train” is useful only when the route is practical and accurately described.
